Deciding Which Cabinets Are Right For You

When it comes to choosing kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets (vanity cabinets), or bar cabinets for you home, the possibilities can seem endless.  Understanding some of the basics will make this process seem a little less daunting.  From selecting your preferred wood species to choosing cabinet door styles and overlays, each decision enhances the the overall look and functionality of your kitchen. Let’s delve into some of the various options that will make your kitchen cabinets a dream come true!

Wood Species:

Wood species is where it all begins. It plays a crucial role in determining the character and aesthetic of your kitchen cabinets.  Oak offers a timeless and durable option with prominent grain patterns.  Cherry Provides a rich warm feel with a multi-colored shades of red, white and brown.  With time, darker tones will turn a deep reddish brown, while light area will turn an even more medium yellow and brown.  If you’re more into a rustic and wild look hickory has a wide variation of colors and grain characteristics all its own and could be the perfect choice for you.  Maple is smooth, closed-grain and accepts a variety of stains but can show a random blotchy with medium and dark stains.  Additionally, painting kitchen cabinets is an option offering endless options to match your style and decor. White kitchen cabinets,  black kitchen cabinets, and grey kitchen cabinets have all become increasingly popular.  Maple is usually is the preferred choice to paint due to its smooth finish and closed grains.

Door and Panel Styles:

The door style is the next critical aspect of your kitchen cabinetry journey.  Whether you prefer a traditional, contemporary, or transitional look, there are plenty of options to suit your taste.  Custom kitchen cabinets offer various panel styles for added visual interest. Raised panels feature a raised center section, creating depth and dimension. Recessed panels provide a clean and understated look, making them versatile for different design styles. Bead panels offer a charming and cottage-like appeal, adding texture and personality to your cabinetry.  While sold panels bring a sturdy feel and clean finish. Shaker cabinets, with their sleek lines and timeless simplicity, are a popular choice for those seeking versatility.

Door and Drawer Overlays:

When looking at the finish product of your kitchen cabinet remodel most are not even aware about the overlay and that there are options.  Overlay refers to how the cabinet doors and drawers cover the cabinet face frame.  Most common are full or designer overlay, half overlay, and for a more high end look, inset to the face frame may be your design preference.  For example, a wall cabinet designer overlay may have a 1 inch reveal on the top, and 1/4″ reveal on the bottom and sides of the cabinet.  Conversely, the half overlay may have a 1 inch reveal on the top, bottom and sides.

Wall and Base Cabinet Construction 101

Cabinets Construction:  Engineered Wood VS. Plywood

As licensed residential builder in the State of Michigan (License #2101211833) for almost a decade I’ve handled a lot of kitchen cabinets and can say that both engineered wood and plywood construction are both great choices for your kitchen or bathroom remodel.  Some things to consider about these choices boil down to the kitchen or bath remodel budget.  Both construction options are typically face framed with a hardwood of choice and then finished on the interior back, sides, top, bottom with a maple vinyl.  The exterior top, bottom are also standardly finished with a maple vinyl, while the finished sides on both engineered wood and plywood cabinets will be covered with a thick veneer exterior of the selected wood species. Engineered wood cabinets are crafted by binding multiple layers of wood fibers together using adhesive, thus creating a sturdy and durable structure. Plywood construction involves stacking multiple thin layers of wood veneers, each placed at a right angle to the previous layer. This cross-grain pattern enhances strength and stability.  While engineered wood cabinets excel in consistency and cost-effectiveness, plywood cabinets boast exceptional strength and resistance to moisture. The choice between the two ultimately depends on your specific needs, budget, and aesthetic preferences. By understanding the differences between these construction methods, you can confidently select the cabinets that will best complement your home while providing the durability and functionality you desire for years to come!  Call us at Tecumseh Cabinet and Countertop a let us help you with all you cabinet needs!
